Who We Are
The Dallas String Quartet is a very eclectic ensemble created by Violist Ion Zanca. The group feels at home in a big variety of genres ranging from jazz to tango, classical to classic rock and pop music. Improvisation is one of the essences of DSQ; some performances are completely improvised, which gives the music a very fresh energy and great flexibility. The unique identity of the group is a result of their constant research for new bow techniques, effects, rhythms, colors, textures and technologies needed to create novel styles and sonorities. With the help of custom made electric instruments and amplification, DSQ has also expanded the possibilities of the regular string quartet venues, taking their music to huge events such as the NBA half time show in the Spurs stadium and the Dallas Cowboys stadium for the Cowboys-Giants game with an audience of more than seventy thousand people. In January of 2013, DSQ had the honor of performing for an Inauguration Ball for President Obama in Washington D.C. They also performed for personalities such as former U.S. President Mr. George W. Bush, Cowboys owner Mr. Jerry Johns, Texas Governor Mr. Rick Perry and SMU President Mr. Gerald Turner. The quartet was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Fox 4’s “Good Day” program, WFAA- Good Morning Texas, and WRR 101.1 classical radio station. The busy schedule of the group shows their success, they performed a total of 136 times in 2012 all across the United States.
